Central Eastern European countries (V4) and their transformation and integration into the EU

Main topics of the presentation will be:
• Approaches to transition and transformation of CEE countries: gradualist vs. shock therapy approach
• Periodization of transformation: 1990s, EU accession in 2004, economic crisis 2008-2014, current development
• Convergence vs. divergence between V4 countries and regional differences within V4 countries
• Convergence with the economic core of the EU (with a focus on relations to Austria and Germany)
• Opportunities and risks of future socioeconomic development: economy, demography and regional differences

Pavel Ptáček holds MSc. and Ph.D. degrees of Charles University in Prague, with specialization in social geography and regional development. The title of his PhD thesis was „Development of Czech Cities and their hinterland during the transformation period (on the example of Olomouc)“. His current research interests comprise economic geography (with special emphasis on the institutional approach and geographies of transition and transformation), regional development (innovations and role of universities in regional development) and settlement geography (urbanization and suburbanization, institutional and planning tools in spatial development). Currently he is employed at the Mendel University in Brno, Department of Social Studies, and is working on projects like innovation and regional development in South Moravian region, border regions in the enlarged Europe or protecting and sustainable development of the Carpathians in a transnational framework.
